(Ed. note: Xay is finishing up his January-March unit in school. He read Columbus and the World Around Him, by Milton Meltzer. I wonder if it’s not a bit biased? Here is his review.)
Columbus grew up in Genoa. He was a map maker. Columbus tried to find a way to get to Asia. He asked the King and Queen of Spain, Ferdinand and Isabella, until they said yes.
With three boats he sailed off. On October 12, 1492, they landed in America. They thought that it was Asia.
Then he sailed back to Europe. Columbus made two more voyages without success; he had gone back to America and tried to find gold. Columbus died on May 20, 1505.
I thought that Columbus just sailed to America and it was nice. I was wrong. They enslaved and almost wiped out the Indians. No one cared when he died.
