Economist Malcolm Gladwell introduces an interesting concept in his book Outliers.

In a nutshell, the idea is that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master something. That would not have been cheerful news to me back when I was a child taking piano lessons, but I have been chewing on this idea since we read the book in 2008.
And guess what? Some of those hours must be near to completion around here.
Like homeschooling. We’ve been at this since the fall of 2000. We’ve well exceeded 10,000 hours there if you count every hour of every day! But I marvel at the ease of planning, organizing and executing this year. I’m sure those hours are in play!
Then there’s teaching piano. I’ve been serious about teaching the children piano for the last 3 years. Something has finally clicked, and I’m seeing results in all three young children, not just the one who would rather practice than do anything else.
Embracing the 10,000 hour concept has done wonders for my endurance. If I’m working hard at something and I don’t see results, that’s no cause for quitting. I haven’t put in my 10,000 hours yet; in due season ye shall reap if you faint not.
Have you completed 10,000 hours on anything yet? Have you noticed a difference in your life?
